CSAS-KAS hold conference on 'Energy Security, Reviving the Economy and Nepal's National Interests'

In cooperation with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, CSAS organized a one-day conference on 'Energy Security, Reviving the Economy and Nepal's National Interests' on July 26, 2010 at Hotel Annapurna, Kathmandu. President of the FNCCI Mr. Kush Kumar Joshi gave the keynote statement. 5 papers were presented on the occasion by Mr. Madhukar SJB Rana (former Finance Minister), Mr. Dipak Gyawali (former Water Resources Minister), Mr. Suman Neupane (General Manage Sunrise Bank Ltd.), Dr. Riddhi Bir Singh (Centre for Energy Studies, T.U.) and Prof. Subhanil Chowdhury of the Kolkata University. Prof. Chowdhury had read out a paper by Prof. Nisha Taneja of the ICREAR, New Delhi on Indo-Nepal Trade issues.

Dr. Beatrice Gorawantschy, Head of the KAS for India and SAARC thanked the CSAS Director Mr. Pandey and the whole team for the successful holding of the conference.

The Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) organized a study tour of Germany for Nepalese M.Ps of the Constituent Assembly led by the Hon'ble Vice-Chairperson Hon'ble Purna Kumari Subedi in October 2008. The Centre for South Asian Studies (CSAS) had coordinated with the KAS and the Constituent Assembly secretariat for this visit. The delegation learnt about the successful federal model as practiced in various federal states of Germany.

Dr. Wolfgang Schuster spoke about the experiences of federalism at a talk program held jointly by CSAS and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung at Hotel Shangri-La on Feb. 28, 2010. Deputy Prime Minister Bijaya Kumar Gachhedar was the chief guest of the occasion. Head of the KAS for India and SAARC Dr. Beatrice Gorawantschy and Director of CSAS Nishchal N. Pandey also spoke on the occasion which was covered well by the Nepali media. Ambassador of Germany to Nepal Verena Grafin von Roedern was also present at the program.

The Centre for South Asian Studies (CSAS) is involved in various national, regional and international networks such as:-
  • CSAS is a member of the Regional Network of Strategic Study Centers (RNSSC) led by NESA Center, Washington D.C.
  • CSAS is the Convener of the Consortium of South Asian Think-tanks (COSATT) supported by Political Dialogue Asia Programme of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung.
  • CSAS is a founder member of the South Asian Regional Research Forum (SARRF), led by BIPSS, Dhaka. - CSAS is a founder member of the Nepal Security Sector network (NSSN), Kathmandu.
  • CSAS is a founder member of the Nepal Security Sector network (NSSN), Kathmandu.
  • Director Pandey was Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS), an autonomous Institute under the National University of Singapore from 2006-2007 and is currently Honourary Fellow of the ISAS. While at ISAS, he authored the book 'India's North- Eastern Region: Insurgency, Economic Development and Linkages with South East Asia' published jointly by ISAS and Manohar Publishers, Delhi.
  • Director Pandey is at present International Research Committee member of the Regional Centre for strategic Studies (RCSS), Colombo.
  • Director Pandey was Journal Referee in 2008 of Strategic Analysis, published by Institute of Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA), New Delhi.
